Head in the Clouds, a joint exhibition between Danny Martinez and Steve Seeley, features the two artists exploring the fine lines between bravery, daydreams, and being delusional. Through painting, drawing, and mixed media, the artists take you through a journey of what having one's ‘head in the clouds’ means to them.
Danny Martinez:
“Head in the Clouds” is an exploration of the constant battle to allow yourself the space to dream while balancing the actual living and participation needed to enjoy life. To have your “Head in the Clouds” is to be out of touch with reality or to day dream. Either interpretation of this phrase can be both good and bad depending on where the pendulum swings.
The artwork created for this show is all about rediscovering the balance between daydreaming and living. Part of this rediscovery was through diving back into one of the only safe spaces for an artist’s mind to wander: The Blackbook. The resulting artwork was literally ripped from his Blackbook as a means of letting you in on the creative process, and retracing the journey certain daydreams can take as they get shaped into something new.”
Steve Seeley:
“To me, “Head in the Clouds” means taking a leap, falling and, ideally, learning to fly on the way down. As of the beginning of this year, I had spent 25 years being a professional artist as well as working a full time job at the same time. I needed to take the next step and finally just work for myself, to become a freelance artist.
This show celebrates that step and the ensuing plunge, metaphorically speaking.
The works in this show reflect not knowing what’s next. For the first time in my career, despite the relatively clear skies, I’m not be able to see where I’m gonna to land.
But even if I don’t land or learn to fly, I’m still going to enjoy the hell out of the fall.”
